About Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux

Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux began his training as a student at the Paris Opera Ballet School. His professional career began at age 14 with Paris Opera where he was principal dancer for 7 years, continuing to train with Serge Peretti, Gérard Mulys, and Raymond Franquetti.  He then moved to America to dance with NYCB. He stayed with the company for 10 years studying with George Balanchine, Andrei Kramarevsky, and Stanley Williams.

Jean-Pierre also danced with Kirov Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet where he studied with Alexander Pushkin, and with Royal Danish Ballet with Vera Volkova .

In 1983 his career transitioned to Artistic Director, choreographer, teacher and coach. He started the Dance Program at Chautauqua Institute which continues to this day. He was Chairman of Indiana University’s Dance Department from 1985 to 1996 and Artistic Director of Charlotte Ballet from 1996 to 2016.
